I sat across a chess board from Werner weekly for many years. Our games were competitive but friendly ---"are you sure you want to make that move?" --- and always ended with Werner telling me "You're getting better and better."

We alternated home and away and always drank tea and ate something chocolate , which Werner acknowledged was his weakness. Silent during the games, we talked afterward and became good friends and shared more good times with Christa and Bonnie.

There is much discussion these days about what it means to be a man. I just point to Werner: strong, disciplined, intelligent, but also gentle, generous and kind. He and his life story were and remain an inspiration to me and Bonnie, who came to love him and Christa and cherish our time with both.
