Obituary of Lloyd W. Spangler, Jr.
Obituary of Lloyd W. Spangler, Jr.
It is with immense sorrow that we announce the passing of beloved father and grandfather, Lloyd W. Spangler, Jr. on Saturday, July 26, 2025. Following a prolonged illness, he passed away peacefully at the age of 99 embraced by his family at Lima Estates in Media, PA. Three months prior, he was preceded in death by his wife, Rosemarie Spangler of Media, Pennsylvania. Like Rosemarie, Lloyd was also an only child to his deceased father and mother, Lloyd W. Spangler, Sr. and Alice Spangler of Bradenton, Florida.
Lloyd was born and raised in Upper Darby, Pennsylvania and graduated from Upper Darby High School in 1944. Upon graduation, he joined the United States Navy during World War II and was assigned to the Navy Hospital Corps as an operating room technician stationed at Glenview Naval Air Station in Illinois. Upon discharge he took advantage of the GI Bill and enrolled at Temple University in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania as a pre-med student. Before completing his degree, he re-enlisted in the Navy during the Korean War and was assigned again to the Navy Hospital Corps as a pharmacist’s mate third class stationed at the U.S. Naval Hospital in Philadelphia. At the end of the Korean War, he returned to Temple to finish his studies and graduated with a liberal arts degree to pursue a career in business.
He began working as an employment placement consultant and shortly thereafter in the mid 1950’s, started his own placement firm, Schneider, Hill Spangler (SHS) with two other colleagues. They quickly grew the business through a pioneering franchising system and established a network of SHS offices across the country. As an Eagles fan, he merged his passion for football and business, successfully making SHS the NFL’s official partner for off-season player employment when their compensation was not nearly the same as it is today.
In the early 1970’s he joined his parents-in-law to expand their residential ornamental iron work business in Florida’s booming real estate environment. After several years there he returned to Philadelphia and become a partner in the management consulting firm of Cole Warren Long where he retired in 1996. During his twenty-three years in that practice, he and his two partners significantly grew the consultancy and worked with many large corporations across the country such as Blue Cross Blue Shield and American Express. One of his proudest achievements were multiple assignments with the business division of the West Wing of the White House over the twelve years of both the Reagan and Bush Administrations.
In the early 1950’s, he met his wife of 72 years, Rosemarie through a love of dancing. They thoroughly enjoyed the New Jersey shore spending many of their early summers there with life-long friends they lovingly called the Jersey Group. They began boating at the Jersey Shore until discovering the Chesapeake Bay where they then spent several decades boating with family and friends. Later in life, he and wife Rosemarie traveled the world including countless trips with their many friends. They happily enjoyed nearly 17 years together at Lima Estates, a continuing care community in Media, PA.
Throughout his life Lloyd was passionate about playing his trumpet. Early on, he played in the Upper Darby High School band and was a proud member of the infamous Archer Eppler Drum and Bugle Corps. He became a bugler while in the Navy and as a devoted Eagles fan, was a proud member of the Philadelphia Eagles Marching Band during the 1960’s. Later in retirement he thoroughly enjoyed playing in various regional bands including the Marple Newtown Band, and the Sousa Band amongst several others where he developed many
friendships that he so cherished. When Lloyd became aware that all the armed services lacked buglers to honor the many WWII, Korean and Vietnam war veterans at their funerals, he joined the Marine Corps League and served as their ceremonial bugler for countless Philadelphia area veteran funerals. For his many years of service with the Marine Corps League, they honored him with a Meritorious Commendation, Certificate of Appreciation and their highest recognition, the Distinguished Service Award.
He is survived by his daughter Leeann Spangler and her spouse, Joanne Smith of Vadnais Heights, MN; son, Craig Spangler and his spouse, Mimi Spangler of Rose Valley, PA; and grandchildren, Andrew Spangler of Manhattan, New York, NY and Sarah Spangler, of North Bethesda, MD.
A private memorial service and interment is being held with his close family. In his remembrance and in lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Shriners Children Hospital of Philadelphia, 3551 N Broad Street, Philadelphia, PA 19140 https://www.shrinerschildrens.org/en/ways-to-give .
