John Sweeney

Obituary of John J. Sweeney

John. J. Sweeney, “Sweeney,” age 65, of Middletown, PA, passed away peacefully on April 9, 2026.

He is survived by his wife, Sharon (Daly) Sweeney, and his children, John B. Sweeney and Sarah C. Sweeney.

Son of the late John A. Sweeney and Catherine Drummy Sweeney, John grew up with his mom in Southwest Philadelphia before moving with her and with Aunt Fran to King of Prussia, PA. He graduated from Archbishop Carroll and earned his degree in psychology from LaSalle University. He made a career as a psychiatric social worker until a paternity leave to care for his son led him to consider elementary education. He earned his master’s degree from the University of Pennsylvania and embarked on a long teaching career at Wallingford Elementary School in Wallingford, PA.

John was a musician, a poet, a guitar aficionado, and a collector. He loved to reminisce about his travels with The Fad, his adventures at Safari Sam’s in Huntington Beach, the music he made with the Hypocrites and the Subterraneans, and the many, many shows he saw throughout his life. Reminders of those escapades adorned his lair, the “Subterranean Lounge,” a music-and-poetry-making hangout and Beat Generation tribute that he and Sharon created in the basement of Fairhill Street and recreated in every home since.

John's passion for the classroom and his love of poetry and music made lasting memories for his Wallingford students, from his regular appearances at “Hoot” to his daily strumming of the “Morning Song” on his old Yamaha acoustic. When he retired from teaching in 2024, John carried that Yamaha with him as a volunteer for Musicians on Call to create bright memories for families at CHOP.

John’s greatest, greatest pride was his children. He loved spending time with them and sharing the world with them. As they grew into adulthood, he loved hearing about their lives and careers and sharing with them the latest news in music, sports, and politics.

He loved the life he and Sharon built together. He loved to drink coffee on the deck in the morning while practicing chords. He loved his dogs, the Phillies, cold beer, live music, and a good meal with friends. He loved his travels to Austin and the beach. He loved the ballpark, the museums, and the music venues of Philadelphia.

But at the end of each day and each adventure, he always loved coming home.

The family sends thanks to Dr. Agerwal and the incredible team of practitioners and nurses at Abramson Cancer Center for a year of hope, love, and life.
