Obituary of Margaret A. Canning

Margaret Anna (“Ann”) (Sunderland) Canning of Aston, age 90, died peacefully on Saturday, December 19, 2020. She was born April 14, 1930 in Philadelphia, PA, and educated in the Philadelphia public schools. After graduation from Olney High School in 1948, Mrs. Canning worked for Rohn & Haas Company – first in the Accounting Department and then as a PBX Operator. She left the company to become a full-time mother and homemaker. In 1971, she rejoined the work force and worked for Gramercy Stationers in Aston, and then the American Greeting Company. She retired at age 65. Along with her husband, Mrs. Canning was a Charter Member of St. Timothy’s Lutheran Church in Aston, where she was active for many years as a member of the church choir, as a teacher in Sunday School, Vacation Bible School and Catechism classes, and in many of the women’s activities. She was a long-time member of the Aston Senior Citizens Club, and was a former Secretary and then President of the Club. She was also previously active in delivering Meals on Wheels. But the most important part of Anna’s life was her family. Devoted wife for 68 years to the late Matthew J. Canning, who passed away in July, 2019. Daughter of the late Percival and Marie Emilius Sunderland of Philadelphia. Sister of the late Doris M. Kopczynski of Huntington Valley, Francis Sunderland of Philadelphia and The Reverend Willian H. Sunderland of Shillington. Godmother to the late Jeffrey L. Boileau of Moorestown, NJ. Predeceased by Sisters-in-law, brothers-in-law and many friends. Survivors: Loving mother of Diane Canning and her husband, William Wright, of Upper Chichester Sister to Ruth E. Ziegler of Lower Gwynedd and Carl Sunderland of Lebanon Aunt to 8 nephews and 6 nieces Due to the current pandemic, Viewing and Interment will be private. A Celebration of Anna’s life is planned and will be held at a later and safer time.
