Joey Concello was my cousin and we were very close growing up and did things together on a weekly basis. Joey loved to collect books on subjects related to Butterflies and Moths and Jungle and Swamp regions of the world. Joey was a self-study expert on Butterflies and Moths and, despite no formal education on the subject, worked as a assistant curator of insects at The Yale Peabody Museum in New Haven, Connecticut. I accompanied him on many field trips to Florida where we would collect insects around our Aunt and Uncle's estate on the St. John's River across from The Ocala National Forest. Joey knew the scientific and common names of all of the butterflies and moths in the eastern United States. Joey was one of the most intelligent persons that I knew and he studied everyday to increase his knowledge of insects and the natural world. Joey was a very meek and mild person who never got into conflict with anyone throughout his life. The last several years of his life were spent in a nursing home in Media, Pa. where he was suffering from mild Dementia. I would visit him regularly, taking him his favorite lunch which was two Zac's cheeseburgers with bacon and extra pepper and an order of french fries. I would also take him a few books from his collection that I removed from his home before it was sold. He knew who I was right up until his last day and his memory of events from the past was perfect. I felt very privileged to have had him as a cousin and a good friend for so many years. I will think of him anytime I pass a forest or a swamp or find myself in the presence of any form of wildlife. RIP Joey you are greatly missed!
