Obituary of Charles D. Werner, Jr.

Charles D. Werner, Jr (Butch)
May 2, 1945 - December 2, 2023

Charles D. (Butch) Werner, Jr., beloved husband, father, and grandfather passed away on Saturday, December 2, 2023, at Chester County Hospital, West Chester, PA, surrounded by his loving family.

Charlie was born to Charles D. Werner, Sr. and Marie Susan (Schumaker) Werner at the University of Pennsylvania Hospital in Philadelphia, PA. He is survived by his loving wife, Kathleen (Shankweiler) Werner of almost 61 years, his son, Charles D. Werner, 3rd and his two grandsons, Evan Joseph and Benjamin Edward Mader. He is predeceased by his daughter, Jennifer Marie (Werner) Mader.

Charlie graduated in 1963 from Sun Valley High School. After graduation, he was employed by Boeing Aircraft from 1963 to 1971 as a sheet metal mechanic, blade balancer, and inspector.During that same time, he took several night courses in finance and literature at Widener University.

Charlie became a trooper in the Pennsylvania State Police, graduating from the Hershey State Police Academy in 1971. He was stationed in Avondale, Lancaster, Philadelphia, and Media barracks. Additionally, he was a Youth Aid Supervisor as well as working in the criminal division as an undercover officer, wire-tapper and in the auto theft department. Upon his retirement from the Pennsylvania State Police in 1987, he returned to Boeing Aircraft and worked as an FAA Inspector until his retirement in 2000.

Charlie was an avid hunter, trapper, and fisherman throughout most of his life. He enjoyed fast cars, Elvis Presley, and always had a soft spot in his heart for his dogs. Charlie was a member of the Masonic Penn Lodge #709 in Concordville, PA for over 50 years, a member of the Robert D. Lapp Memorial Lodge of the Fraternal Order of Police #66, and the Retired State Police Association.

The family always vacationed in the Outer Banks of North Carolina with their children. Therefore, when they retired, the couple moved there for two years. However, their love of Pennsylvania brought them back to Chester County, happily cultivating many friendships in their new neighborhood of Traditions at Longwood. They traveled extensively, visiting many states from coast to coast, as well as Ireland, the Caribbean, the Panama Canal and Hawaii on their 50th Anniversary.

Charlie was diagnosed with mixed dementia (Alzheimer’s + vascular) in 2016 and developed diabetic peripheral neuropathy shortly thereafter.
