Obituary of Leland D. Hunter, Jr.

Leland D. Hunter Jr., affectionately known as Lee to his friends and loved ones, passed away peacefully at the age of 85, leaving behind a legacy of service, community involvement, and boundless love for his family. Born on August 2, 1939, in Upland, Pennsylvania, Lee was a man whose life was characterized by dedication, generosity, and a warm, engaging spirit that made a lasting impact on everyone he met. 

Lee was predeceased by his father, Leland Hunter Sr., his mother, Thelma (Linaweaver), five siblings and his beloved wife, Sandy (Paige). His memory will be cherished and kept alive by his son, Steve (Linda), his daughter, Kim, bonus son Harris Bloom (Carol), his grandson, Tripp and brother Lance (Edna). It would take far too long to list those he considered his adopted children and grandchildren. They know who they are. 

A proud graduate of Eddystone High School, Lee was a man of many talents and an unwavering work ethic. His career path included valuable roles at Belmont Iron, Ludwig Honolds, Fair Acres and Upland Boro. Lee also dedicated part of his life to serving the community as a bus driver for special needs students within the Chester Upland School District, Lee's commitment and compassion made a lasting impact on all those he worked with, especially the children whose lives he touched daily. 

Lee's commitment to his community was further exemplified by his remarkable tenure as a life member of the Upland Fire Company, where he served for over 65 years. His dedication to public service extended to his involvement with the Delco Fireman's Association for over 55 years, the Franklin Fire Company, his roles as an Upland Boro Councilman and Code Enforcement Officer. He also held the position of Past President of the Upland Seniors Club, where he had been an active member for more than two decades. 

In addition to his service to the community, Lee was appointed as a Pennsylvania State Constable for 18 years, volunteered for the Main Street P.T.O., and was a life member of the West End Boat Club. Since 1968, he has been a member of the Chapel of the Four Chaplains, demonstrating his deep commitment to faith and fellowship. 

Lee's cherished spending time with his family above all else. He had a passion for simple pleasures, such as solving search-a-word puzzles, playing solitaire, feeding his beloved wildlife, and reading the Daily Times from cover to cover. Lee enjoyed sitting outside his home, greeting passersby with a wave and a smile, and engaging in conversations with his neighbors. He was a frequent rescuer of his daughter’s plants.  A lifelong fan of the Philadelphia Eagles, Lee's enthusiasm for his team was infectious and unwavering.  He was always ready with a “Dad Joke” and a Peppermint Patty for the road. 

Described by those who knew him best as loving, generous, and thoughtful, Lee's approach to life was one of kindness and a readiness to lend a helping hand. His presence in the community was constant, he was known for his ability to listen, empathize, and offer his support wherever it was needed. 

Lee's legacy is one that will be remembered by many – not only by his immediate family but also by the countless lives he touched through his community service, his warm-hearted nature, and his unwavering dedication to the well-being of others. His was a life well lived, full of purpose, love, and an enduring commitment to making the world a better place for everyone. 

As we bid farewell to Lee, we celebrate a life that exemplified the very best of what it means to be a part of a community. His memory will continue to inspire those who had the privilege of knowing him, and his contributions will be felt for many years to come. Lee's spirit will forever be a beacon of generosity and love in the hearts of his family, friends, and all those fortunate enough to have crossed paths with him. 

Visitation: Tuesday, October 1st  from 6:00-8:00PM and Wednesday, October 2nd from 10:00-11:15AM at Minshall Shropshire-Bleyler Funeral Home, Middletown (Rte.#352) & Knowlton Rds., Middletown Twp., Media, PA 19063.

Funeral Service: Wednesday, October 2nd at 11:30AM at the funeral home.

Interment: Lawn Croft Cemetery.
