Leon Schagrin

Obituary of Leon Schagrin

Leon Schagrin, 103, died October 27 at Delaware County Memorial hospital. A long time resident of Philadelphia, he moved to Chester Heights four years ago. He was a bus driver for PTC and later for SEPTA for more than four decades until his retirement in 1972. He loved his work and enjoyed talking to his passengers, many of whom waited for his bus to arrive. He reluctantly retired at age 65 to spend his retirement years monitoring his stock market investments, working crossword puzzles and cryptograms, at which he was quite adept, reading financial and political news articles, and reading and writing poetry. He watched the TV show Wheel of Fortune and often solved the puzzle before the contestants could. He had a remarkable memory for someone who quit school at an early age to help support his parents and 10 siblings. He is survived by a brother, Robert, and a sister, Esther Alter, two children, Judith Sever (Bruce) and Edward Schagrin (Carole), 10 nieces and nephews, 14 grand nieces and nephews, and 5 great grand nieces and nephews. He is predecesed by his wife of 70 years, Gertrude, and by 8 brothers and sisters. Grave side services will be held at Edgewood Memorial Park, Glen Mills, on Friday at 12:00 Noon. In lieu of flowers, contributions to the Sarah R. Schagrin Scholarship Fund, Alumnae Association of the Philadelphia High School for Girls, 1400 W. Olney Ave., Philadelphia, PA 19141-2398, would be appreciated.
