Obituary of Hannah B. Herring

Hannah B. "Denny" (nee Maas) Herring, 91, died Monday, February 13, 2012 in Media, PA; beloved wife of the late Maj. Gen John H. Herring, Jr. (USAF) and mother of David Herring (Cindy) of Swarthmore, PA and Kathryn Herring (Ronnie Heifetz) of Cambridge, MA. She was born in Berlin, Germany to Dr. Hermann and Mrs. Hedwig Maas on August 24, 1920. She immigrated to America in 1924, grew up in St. Louis, MO, and proudly served in the Army Air Corps during World War II and as a First Lieutenant in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean War. She graduated from Harris Teachers College (BA) and Columbia University (MA History). Callback to military service interrupted her PhD program at Columbia in History and Political Science. Mrs. Herring taught history in the St. Louis and Fairfax County, VA high schools. Possessed of extraordinary energy and intellect, she loved politics, travel, books, teaching, volunteer work, musical theatre, crossword puzzles and time with her family. Mrs. Herring also is survived by a brother, James Maas of Woodbridge, VA; grandsons Matthew of Arlington, VA and Joshua of Swarthmore, PA; 3 nephews (John, Dan and Mike Maas) and 2 nieces (Lynn Stapleton and Melanie Drake). Memorial Contributions in lieu of flowers may be given in memory of Hannah Herring to Hospice ( www.hospicefoundation.org), where she volunteered.
