Obituary of W. Robert Van Zandt

Dr. W. Robert Van Zandt died peacefully Wednesday, November 28, 2012 at Crozer-Chester Medical Center, surrounded by his family, after a valiant seven month battle with heart disease. Dr. Van Zandt was born February 8, 1929 to the late Anne Hitch Phillips Van Zandt and Albert Williams Van Zandt. Raised in Chester, PA, he was a 1947 graduate of Chester High School. He was an Eagle Scout, a Counselor at Camp Dudley on Lake Champlain, as well as at Delmont Scout Camp. He graduated from Dickinson College in 1951 and Temple University School of Dentistry in 1955. His practice was in Chester, PA and Lima, PA from where he retired. He served in the US Navy Corps as a Dentist at Cherry Point Marine Air Station from 1955 to 1957 and then became a reservist at the Philadelphia Naval Base, until 1990. He retired with the rank of Captain. An avid and skilled golfer, he was a 43 year member of the Springhaven Club, where he won multiple events and trophies and scored two holes in one. He also belonged to Seaview Country Club, Absecon, NJ, for 25 years, Penn State Golf Assoc. and Philadelphia Golf Assoc., as well as the Philadelphia Seniors Golf Assoc. He was on staff at Crozer-Chester Medical Center for 40 years, and served as Dentist for Fair Acres for 35 years. He belonged to the Del. Cty. Chamber of Commerce, and the Kiwanis's Club of Chester, PA. He served as President of the Chester and Delaware County Dental Society. After golf, came his love of antique cars, of which he had three. His wife and he traveled all over the east coast with the Antique Automobile Club of America, where one of his cars won a Grand National Award. He also belonged to the Historical Car Club of PA and his senior group the Road Runners. He was married to Margaret Jo Sayes Van Zandt, deceased, and together they had three children.
