Obituary of Ellis Smedley Ward
Captain Ellis Smedley Ward, Jr., age 93, of Media, PA, died Saturday, September 13, 2014.
Smedley graduated from The William Penn Charter School and Dartmouth College, class of 1943. He retired from the Pennwalt Chemical Company, as Manager of the Isotron Division. During World War II, he was commissioned at Notre Dame Midshipman School, and served aboard a destroyer for two years, until the ship was struck by a Japanese Kamikaze plane near Okinawa. Later he was recalled for destroyer duty in the Korean War and assigned to the Sixth Fleet in the Mediterranean. He, also, was Commanding Officer of the Naval Reserve Battalion, Philadelphia Navy Yard, after the Korean War and later retired as Captain, U.S.N.R. Smedley was a 50 year member of the Masons, a member of the Gulph Mills Golf Club and the Pine Valley Golf Club.
He was predeceased by his wife of 64 years, Alice Lawrence Murray of Tuxedo Park, NY, and is survived by E. Smedley Ward, III, Cynthia W. Savage, Elizabeth W. Ledyard, Grant M. Ward, nine grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
